Suikyo Tenmangu / Temples and Shrines

Suikyo Tenmangu

Kyushu's largest commercial district 'Tenjin' was named after the God of literature and calligraphy.

Suikyo Tenmangu stands quietly in a valley of office buildings. It is dedicated to the Tenjin God, Michizane Sugawara.

Suikyo literally means 'water mirror'. When Michizane Sugawara was exiled to Dazaifu, he saw his emaciated reflection on the river surface here.

Suikyo Tenmangu was first constructed in Imaizumi. Later, in the early Edo period, it was moved by the first Fukuoka domain chief, Nagamasa Kuroda, to Fukuoka castle as an east tutelary shrine that faces north-east.
